little tips and tricks for some time. Thank you for sharing them with us, Olivia.
More Great Tips for Your Low Carb Kitchen. . .
"Originality consists not only in doing things differently, but also in doing things better."
Edward Skedman
Need to butter/grease a dish? When I have to butter or otherwise grease or oil a cooking or baking dish, I put a plastic
baggie on my hand before dipping it into the butter or oil, then butter the dish as usual. This way
I still have control over where the butter goes in the pan, but I don't have to wash my hands for
several minutes afterwards to get the grease off.
Did a pan of cooking food boil over? Has your heating cream accidentally burned in the bottom
of the pan? Now there's icky, sticky, charred "stuff" in the bottom of your cookware.
Not to worry! Put 3-4 drops of dish detergent in the pan, then fill the pan halfway with cold
water. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat, discard the boiling water, and wash your pan as
you normally would. The pan will be much easier to clean now.
And what about the burnt smell that's left behind? To neutralize burnt food odors in the house, (even if it's just
from burnt toast), mix 1/2 cup whole cloves with 2 cups water in a heavy duty sauce pan and bring to boil. Simmer cloves for
15-30 minutes. The house smells wonderful and the burnt odor is gone. Cloves can be kept
in the pan inside the oven to keep oven fresh. The cloves can be used again for up to
one week simply by refreshing the water and bringing to a boil whenever needed.
Want stay-crunchy Celery? Trim celery to your liking, and without washing, wrap in good heavy
aluminum foil, or double foil, and put in crisper. Will stay crisp for at the very least 3 weeks.
To make your own Brown and Serve Sausages, boil link sausages for 10 minutes. Drain well, dry,
wrap and freeze. To serve - just thaw and brown.
For a delicious quick salad dressing: Mix half Italian dressing and half mayonnaise.
Many low carb cookies are more fragile than traditional cookies. So when making delicate cookies,
use baking parchment on each baking sheet. Transfer the entire sheet to the cooling rack. This will
keep the cookies from breaking so easily.
Store walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts in the freezer and they'll last substantially longer.
Salad Tips:
- Rub the new wooden salad bowl with olive oil daily for a period of 10 days
and it will season it delightfully for the salads to come.
- Do not mix salads until they are ready to serve.
- A quarter of a medium size apple contains 4.3 grams of carbs. Dice that apple quarter up and it can be used in
almost any salad recipe to give added flavor, crispness and crunchiness.
Most of us low carbers eat a lot of cauliflower. But have you noticed how after you cook it,
it's a yellow-y beige, rather than an appetizing bright white? Here's the solution: Add a spoonful of
vinegar to your cooking water to make cauliflower come out bright white and picture perfect.
Ever stack your drinking glasses in the cupboard? Quite often you can end up with two glasses stuck
inside of one another. There's a simple solution: The answer lies in some very simple science.
Cold things contract and hot things expand. So place ice in the inner glass and dip the outer glass
in warm water. They will come apart easily.
