A New Look...
With this issue — the first of the new year (and the 4th year of publication), we begin
with a new format. People have been referring to this as a "magazine" for some time now,
and since it's a page-by-page color publication, we agree that the term "magazine" is actually
more fitting than "newsletter." So from here on out, we welcome you to the Low Carb Luxury
The holidays are over, and in our last issue (December 27, 2002), we covered the making of
New Year's Resolutions and the opportunity of making fresh starts. If you missed the
issue, click here to read it.
The Low Carb Luxury Cookbook is nearly ready as well. We'll be placing an announcement both here and at the site
Lastly, we've added new search options at Low Carb Luxury to help you locate that special recipe, article, or feature
you need. More to come soon.
Of Interest In The Media...
Dr. Atkins on Larry King Live:
On January 6th, Dr. Robert Atkins appeared as Larry King's guest for a one hour discussion and call-in
program. We thought Dr. Atkins did a wonderful job of staying on topic and expressing the basic concepts of the
diet as well as trying to set straight a number of myths. Kudos to Dr. A!
Help Save Odyssey 5:
[ OFF-TOPIC RANT: ]
On Christmas Eve, Showtime made the decision to cancel the very smart, innovative SciFi series, Odyssey 5,
despite it being their highest-rated original series! This means no conclusion to the many, many open story lines,
including of course, the entire main thrust of the show — stopping the destruction of the planet itself.
Personally I have lost far too many good shows to just keep taking this in stride. They promote show after show as
being worthy of your loyalty and support, and when you, the viewer, do commit to the story and the characters,
they axe it with no consideration of bringing the story to a close. No resolution for millions of fans.
Please take a moment to click the banner at left and learn what you can do to help keep this wonderful show on the air.
"Even the smallest one may change the course of the future" — Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Our product review team features two (2) "Products Of The
Month" — one in each issue of our
magazine. These products will be the group consensus of those we find to be the most
innovative, healthy, tasty, and/or helpful to the low-carber's daily dietary regime.
The folks at Keto Foods have debuted their new
Keto Spaghetti and we think you're gonna want to keep this one in
your pantry at all times. It cooks very much like any spaghetti (and comes packaged the same way.) We
found it best when timed at 8 minutes from it being immersed in boiling water.
What surprised me was
that when I tasted it right out of the pan (before butter or sauce was put on it), it wasn't bad at all...
no heavy soy taste. By the time we added a sauce, it was really quite delicious. We tried it with several sauces
including a classic meat and mushroom tomato-based
Italian sauce (our favorite), an alfredo sauce (superb with diced chicken), and with a carbonara sauce
(with plenty of bacon!) The spaghetti hold the sauces really well and doesn't get gummy or fall apart.
A single serving according to the package (it comes in 8-oz boxes) is 1/6 of the box and comes in at
5 effective grams of carbohydrate (after fiber.) Many of us found the serving size a little small
and felt 1/4 of the package was more appropriate as a main dish. That would make it 7 1/2 grams of
carb per serving... still very very reasonable! If you've been missing spaghetti and need to keep those
carbs down, this is the one. Keto Spaghetti is available from The Low Carb Connoisseur
